English for Academic Purposes (ESL)

The lead teacher at Maestro - Cara Fulton - has been teaching English for Academic Purposes (ESL) at Howard University Continuing Education (HUCE) since 1997 with great success. The students continue their studies at universities around the country including George Washington University, the University of Ohio, the University of Minnesota, American University, and many others. Naturally a great many go on to study at Howard University. In fact, several have earned their Ph.Ds there or are in the process of doing so.

To enroll in the University Intensive English program at HUCE, follow the application process online.

Maestro also offers several academic programs of its own.

American Accent Development - Speak with confidence and be clearly understood. Developing an American accent does not mean eliminating your native accent. It means adopting important aspects of American speech to communicate better. Mastering U.S. "speech music" (our intonation, rhythm, and stress patterns) will provide the foundation of the course. Working on sounds you have trouble with will play a secondary role. You'll build a greater appreciation of the diversity of accents in the United States.

Public Speaking - The gains in your self-confidence as a result of learning to speak in public effectively will reach other aspects of your life. Take your tips from Toastmasters International (LINK) to eradicate that fear of public speaking.

Crossroads Café - Middle-Level learners of English as a Second Language. The 26 video episodes depict a cast of likeable characters from an imaginary Crossroads Café in a sitcom (situation comedy). The course teaches English as it entertains and helps you to understand American culture. The course can be used by the independent learner, the distant learner, or the classroom learner (preferred).

On Common Ground - Advanced learners of English as a Second Language, adult/youth civics courses, and those preparing for the US Citizenship exam. Each of the 15 episodes includes an action-packed story and a short documentary segment. They show the "common ground" - the common values that people in the United States share.

Workplace Essential Skills - Adult learners at the pre-GED level (roughly the 6th - 8th grade) reading level. Twenty-four videos model of application of basic skills within the context of pre-employment and workplace setting. The four accompanying workbooks present instruction, practice, and application of the critical skills that are represented in the programs: Employment, Communication & Writing, Reading, and Mathematics. Basic skills, problem solving, and decision-making are integrated into every lesson. Additional learning opportunities are available through online activities thanks to a partnership with Public Broadcasting Services (www.PBS.org).

Learning Express: 20 Minutes a Day to Success series -

Each workbook helps you acquire practical, essential skills FAST, through a series of plain-spoken 20-minute units. Excellent for those preparing for job entrance exams or those who need to polish the skills that lead to success.
